          Adoption is a big decision in one's life and it isn't a decision that should be taking lightly. Consulting an adoption lawyer will be necessary. Many family lawyers specialize in one of the following categories.

• adoption attorney

You're going to want adoption attorney who has dealt with adoption agencies in the past.  Some adoption agencies have their own lawyers that they deal with on a regular basis.  While many people have their own attorney who can draw up the adoption papers, most probably do not and will need to make the decision on who to choose. My personal experience is with an adoption attorney who worked along side of the adoption agency. The cost was a little higher, but the process was so streamlined that the convenience was well worth the little more money. After all, most adoption agency's attorney's legal fees are very competitive.

The bottom line is: If you have your own adoption lawyer or you decide to acquire one through the adoption agency, it is an expense you need to plan on. You MUST have someone who knows the adoption law in your state.

On the bright side, the adoption lawyer will pale in comparison compared to the adoption agency fees.  I know, I know... that probably doesn't make you feel any better.
